Objective
Conceptual is the theme that was selected for the Association for Art History's annual conference. During the three day event, an extensive conversation exploring what is considered conceptual art and how it has evolved throughout time is examined and debated. The conference brings together humanities professionals, students and artists alike to explore the theme. Regardless of which of the three demographics an attendee falls into, the common thread they all share is the desire to learn and understand as much as they can about art history. By keeping their themes intellectually challenging and engrossing, the Association for Art History consistently finds their conferences successful.
Overview
The design approach for the conference is contemporary, typographic and embraces amorphous shapes. All three design decisions can be seen together upon first interaction with the logo. The logo harnesses the playfulness of conceptualizing by deliberately breaking the word conceptual three times and thus slightly hindering legibility. Chivo, a grotesque sans-serif typeface, is used for all headers and subheaders, further elevating a contemporary feel. An invigorating color palette of cobalt blue, pale rose and coral activates the design work. Low opacity shapes interact with imagery that has been converted to black and white, allowing the amorphous shapes to interact with the photography. By considering the theme, the design for the Association for Art History annual conference maintains visual appeal while providing attendees the necessary information.
